Slow Architecture House

The Project

Location:   The Terraces in The Ecovillage
Floor Space: 180m2
Year Completed:   2014
Architect:   PTMA Architecture

Description

This pavilion home was designed to be constructed in stages, as budget allows, as a ‘co-house’. This is a form of shared housing where a group of families or friends share space and facilities on a block of land. Rather than being  a new idea, it is a rebirth and rethink of the traditional ‘extended family’ lifestyle with all it’s benefits and complications.

This house was designed on a strict palette of materials, colour and set-out to highlight feature recycled elements including windows, doors, kitchen and feature timber. It incorporates solar panels, solar hot water, significant rainwater storage and a hydronic floor heating system.

The slowly evolving design and construction has allowed the clients to enjoy the changes as they happen. It has enabled them to source various recycled elements and incorporate their reuse into the home – where a modern start to finish construction would make such flexibility and evolution difficult.
